Somehow amidst all the glitter and reds, we seem to be missing a good purple nail polish for this Holiday 2014…or am I missing something?? Instead, I found something in my stash whilst cleaning this past weekend, and decided to revisit an oldie but goodie!
NARS Purple Rain Nail Lacquer was originally released in Spring 2010 and stayed on in their permanent collection. It was recently reformulated together with the release of the 3.1 Phillip Lim collection (reviewed here and here), and the bottle I have here is the newer version. It is a stunning rich shade of gem-like purple flecked with red and gold shimmers. The shimmers give it a holographic quality, such that it looks reddened purple at certain angles. Unlike the “invisible” shimmers that Chanel prefers, these actually show up when applied on the nails too.
Purple Rain is a somewhat thick formula, and I find the new extra wide brushes to be a little thick. The combination of the 2, made this prone to applying in gobs and then streaking when you go over too many times. However, it is nicely self-levelling, and dries quickly to give the flawless finish you see above.
Unfortunately I don’t have Purple Rain in the older formula to compare against, and NARS polishes do tend to vary from shade to shade. However, I’m glad the square cap now snaps off so it is easier to apply the polish, and between the extra wide brush and the older thin brush I’ll take the new anytime.
NARS Purple Rain Nail Lacquer is a yummy rich purple with complementary shimmers that make it interesting without going too bling. I love that this one remained purple on me regardless of lighting, and doesn’t turn too black (I have enough of that for now). So, if you are missing a good purple nail polish for the coming holiday season, do consider this.
