I’m always envious of ladies with seemingly perfect skin as mine is always prone to breaking in angry red patches if I eat something wrong or try something new. Of course, lack of sleep and work stress all lead to my skin being even more sensitive than usual. That is why, I usually keep a stash of facial masks at home for all sorts of emergencies. From purifying masks, to soothing hydrating masks and brightening and lifting masks, I have all of them. And one of my latest favorite masks is the My Beauty Diary Black Obsidian Moisturizing Black Mask.
My Beauty Diary is a Taiwanese beauty brand that has a wide variety of sheet masks at affordable prices. The new Black Mask range consists of 3 exquisite variants – Black Obsidian Moisturizing, Black Rose Brightening, and Black Pearl Total Effect. All 3 new Black Masks include ingredients that target skin elasticity, pigmentation and uneven skin tone caused by UV rays and environmental pollution. They feature an improved formula that includes My Beauty Diary’s proprietary CosphingoTM, a naturally-extracted ingredient that delivers and improves the skin’s moisture-retaining ability and helps to seal in moisture. It is coupled with a unique 3D Hyaluronic Acid and Yeast Compound which forms a protective film over the skin to replenish moisture and prevent dehydration.
I have used many different My Beauty Diary masks in the past, but I was most drawn to the new Black Masks because of their cool, black packaging. When you have as many varieties of sheet masks to choose from, sometimes aesthetics matter. But what struck me most, was that upon tearing open the packaging, the mask that I lifted out was also black! I know this sounds silly, after all that’s what it says on the box, but it was my very first time using a black colored sheet mask and it was really quite an interesting experience. But above all, I loved the texture of the new Black Mask. It uses high quality cotton from Japan, which is very soft and smooth, and it has some slight elasticity to it as well so that the mask is able to mould and conform to every single curve of the face. This also allows it to cling well onto the face, and does not come apart even when I walk around or talk (even eat an entire bowl of instant noodles!!). Compared to many other cotton sheet masks that I’ve used, this is one of the most comfortable that I’ve encountered.
It also has extra fabric to wrap around the underside of my chin and jawline. The superior quality of the material is evident here as the mask is able to adhere well and stay on snugly throughout the 15-20 minutes that I had it on.
Here is a closer look at the chin and jawline. See how well the mask clings to the face, there is no gaping pockets of air where the mask comes apart. Also, the mask is richly saturated with serum and yet it does not drip.
The one that I have been using is the Black Obsidian Moisturizing Black Mask, which specifically targets hydration and illumination. It is infused with French Black Obsidian which helps support the skin’s protective mechanism and enhances hydration. The inclusion of Laminara Digitata and sugar maple provide a rich source of anti-oxidants and help to rejuvenate the skin. Other ingredients like Calendula, Licorice, and Ruscus Aculeatus extracts relieve dry, rough and irritated skin. Bladder wrack seaweed, Aloe vera, and hydrolyzed Jojoba all further boosts hydration, soothes and moisturizes the skin.
When I first tried out the Black Obsidian Moisturizing Black Mask, I was suffering from a severe reaction to some chemical exfoliants. There were angry red patches on both cheeks that felt tender to the touch, and started to peel over the course of the next few days. Everything that I applied in an attempt to pacify ended up stinging my skin very painfully, and nothing absorbed. In the end, I applied this mask and immediately, my skin was soothed! Where my skin was taut and irritated, it felt like a shot of hydration was delivered into the depths of the skin, and I was able to apply my usual makeup without it creasing and flaking up horribly. And where even my richest moisturizer was only able to hold off the dryness for an hour or so, this mask was able to seal the moisture in and keep my skin looking reasonably well for 8 hours!
