Hello November! How quickly we are speeding towards year-end! The kind folks at YSL sent me several lovely packages over the past month, but I hadn’t been able to turn out blog posts as quickly Instagramming. There is no time like the present, and I’d like to focus on the latest Holiday 2017 collection here today. And over the course of the next week or so, I’ll go back to the other lovely and permanent items when I get the chance. Now, let’s turn the spotlight onto the new YSL Dazzling Lights Collection!
Every Christmas, YSL releases a travel-friendly multi-use palette in a limited edition packaging. I’m not always a fan of carton packaging on my palettes because I live in a very humid climate that is unforgiving on paper products; and I know everytime I feature a mixed cream/powder palette I will receive comments about that. But it is what it is, and there is something captivating about this year’s design that at least makes the YSL Dazzling Lights Collector Palette stand out from the crowd.
The palette is organized with the powder products on the upper 2/3, and 2 cream products along the bottom. There is a pale pink highlighter/blush which may also be used on the eyes, and 4 shimmery powder eyeshadows. YSL has also thoughtfully included a standard cheek brush applicator, a sponge-tipped eyeshadow applicator, and a tiny lip brush. I like that the palette doesn’t weigh a ton, and the generous-sized mirror makes application on the go a breeze.
From left to right, the swatches are:
Interestingly, the cream shades smell like YSL’s infamous Rouge Volupte Shine formula with the fruity mango scent, and the semi-sheer shiny finish is definitely spot on. However, I reckon these may be used on the cheeks as well and then set with the powder highlight if you’d like.
For a holiday palette, I found the eyeshadows to be too light for my liking. The deep purple does build up nicely, but it takes me quite a lot of work to get to the level of intensity shown in the swatches above. So, I cheated by using a black kohl liner and smudged my way up for a darkening base, before patting on the dark purple. Hence the resultant look is deeper and blacker. In contrast, the silvery blue is very pigmented, and a light tap into the middle of my lid gives a bright dimensional pop. I wish the pale pink shimmer is more opaque and intense, as it doesn’t show up quite as well on my inner corner, though I could have used the cheek shade for the same purpose.
Here is the full look in context. I had used the cheek shade on top of another blusher, high up on my cheekbones as a highlighter, because otherwise it makes me look too washed out. On my lips, I’m wearing the pink cream shade all over followed by the red cream in the middle. The ombre effect is prettier and more obvious in real life than the picture manages to capture.
No holiday collection is complete with a sexy lipstick… in this case, 6 gorgeous shades! YSL Rouge Pur Couture is one of the creamiest lipstick formulas out there, and they are all nicely pigmented. This season’s offerings are repromotes of some of the most popular shades, including the once-soldout #52 Rouge Rose [reviewed here] and beautiful neutral-toned red #1 Le Rouge. The other shades are #9 Rose Stiletto, #13 Le Orange [reviewed here], #19 Le Fuchsia [here], and #70 Le Nu. They come adorned with the pink shimmery fireworks design on the case, and also engraved on the bullet itself. Truly collector’s items!
As this year has been all about the YSL glow, the cult Touche Éclat Pen returns in the limited edition design. It is available in the 2 usual shades – #1 Rose Lumiere and #2 Ivoire Lumiere. These are really handy as undereye correctors and highlighters for the nose ridge/cheeks/cupids bow, etc.
There are also 2 limited edition La Laque Couture nail polishes that I have my eyes on. If I end up getting them, I’ll be sure to whip up some creative nail look and update either here on the blog or over on my Instagram [@silverkis] for your viewing pleasure!
