Happy Friday!! It’s a super amped up Friday for me as I got to spend my lunch hour at the Tom Ford beauty counter at TANGS Orchard!! I had so much fun there, testing out all the aaah-mazing products that I had a hard time dragging myself back to work.
For those of you, like me, who have been put-off by the male-dominated sales force, you have reason to celebrate now because they have recently hired a lady – Hidayu. *YAY* She was so incredibly nice and patient as I pulled out item after item and flooded her with questions. She was also very upfront with me as I asked some rather direct questions comparing TF with other luxury brands like YSL and Chanel.
Tom Ford Lip Color
As I have been wearing lots of red lipsticks lately, I asked Hidayu to recommend a couple of non-red lipsticks for day wear.
“To Tom Ford, there is no more dramatic accessory than a perfect lip. It is the focus of the face and it has the power to define a woman’s whole look. Each Lip Color is Tom Ford’s modern ideal of an essential makeup shade. Rare and exotic ingredients including soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter and chamomilla flower oil create an ultra-creamy texture with an incredibly smooth application. Specially treated color pigments are blended to deliver pure color with just the right balance of luminosity.”
True to description, these lipsticks glide on incredibly smoothly, and leave a buttery finish that feels truly luxurious! It is well pigmented, although depending on the color, may require a 2nd coat to be truly opaque. I was most keen on Indian Rose, which is a medium rosy pink with a slight beige undertone. On me, Indian Rose made me look matured and elegant. Useful if I want to look more serious at work.
Hidayu actually recommended Spanish Pink instead. This is slightly lighter than Indian Rose, with a slight peach tone. Although skeptical, I gave it a try anyway, and was surprised to find that Spanish Pink did make me look younger and fresher!
Then, Hidayu pulled out True Coral, and told me that this is one that will actually look very good on me. As its name implies, this is one bright coral color, and I mean BRIGHT. But Hidayu told me to dab it on with a finger instead of swiping the tube all over my lips… and she was right! True Coral looked glorious on me! It brightened up my face, and brought out a porcelain lightness that I had never seen before! I loved this so much, I almost cried when we found out it’s OUT OF STOCK!!
I also got to try a couple of Lip Shines, but my heart just wasn’t in it. These are incredibly sheer, almost like tinted lip balms. Even after 3-4 swipes from the tube, I couldn’t see much color on my lips. To get better payoff, i’m thinking you could first line and fill in your lips with a matching pencil, before layering the Lip Shine. If I had to compare, I’d say Chanel’s Rouge Coco Shine range affords better color payoff with similar shine, and at a much lower price point!
Tom Ford Eye Color Quad
“The centerpiece of the Tom Ford color collection. Each Eye Color Quad is designed with four opulent complementing shades that achieve multiple looks, from a bold, smokey eye, to a sexy slash of color and everything in between. Formulated with advanced color processes, the four luxurious finishes – sheer sparkle, satin, shimmer, and matte – offer a spectrum of intensity and effects and deliver incredible shade fidelity and outstanding adhesion. Two custom applicators included.”
To nurse my broken heart, I asked Hidayu to show me some of the eyeshadow palettes instead. Crushed Amethyst was calling out to me – this is an all-over purple palette, with a dark maroon for liner, lilac satin all-over shade, sparkly purple, and a shimmery white highlighter. The pigmentation was excellent, something I’m starting to associate as one of the hallmarks of Tom Ford Beauty. However, I found it to be somewhat one-note.
Unfortunately, the colors are simply not coming across on pictures as they really should.
Hidayu showed me Sahara Haze, which contained a very unique sparkling jade green. The palette also contained a beautiful shimmery cream white highlighter, a satin light taupe grey shadow, and a matte dark plum grey liner. On me, Hidayu added black liner, and blended the grey liner over. It was GORGEOUS!! This was a palette that had more versatility, could be worn for day or amped up for night.
Hidayu showed me a technique of pressing sparkling eye shadows into the lids instead of sweeping them. This ensured the color pigments actually “catches” onto the lid, and keeps the sparkles from falling everywhere.
Here I am wearing the Sahara Haze quad on my eyes, Spanish Pink lips, and Frantic Pink blusher.
Final note on wearability
For the extravagant price, I expected to be blown away by Tom Ford Beauty, and I was! Despite the buttery texture, Tom Ford Lip Color lasted me a good 4 hours even with me sipping from my mug every 10minutes or so. Tom Ford Eye Color Quad turned my eyes magical, and lasted me all through the rest of the day without creasing or smudging (a problem I faced with ALL Chanel quads). And of course, you already know I love Tom Ford Traceless Foundation (as elucidated here). Those with some extra dosh looking to pamper yourselves, look no further! These are bound to be your perennial favorites, lasting through all seasons!
ps… i never spent any time discussing the packaging, but these babies are all beautifully packaged! Upon presenting me with my Sahara Daze, Hidayu made it a point to show me the mahogany suede sleeve, the nondescript walnut case with gold edging, and the TF inscriptions!
