I sometimes feel very fortunate to be living in Singapore where everything is so easily accessible. It was not until I started living abroad some years ago that I realized how much of a difference that monthly pedicure made to the condition of my feet! There are of course the immediately obvious things like chipped nail polish and overgrown cuticles; but what caused me the greatest discomfort is when my heels crack and my soles form calluses. Back in the good old days I resorted to manual files when I cannot get myself to a reliable nail salon, but those can be a lot of work and do more harm than good if not used properly. So I was super excited to try the new Scholl Velvet Smooth Express Pedi Electronic Foot File!
I think we all take our feet for granted to some extent, I know I abuse my feet daily, sometimes even without being conscious of it. Recently when I was on a 2-week long vacation, I was suddenly reminded of how much even simple walking was straining my feet. Within days, my newly pedicured feet developed severe cracks on my heels that even the toughest moisturizer could not save! Not only was it scratching against the sheets at night, it was painful to walk over the next few days. So that was when I pulled out my brand new Scholl Velvet Smooth Express Pedi Electronic Foot File and put it to the test.
Scholl’s Velvet Smooth Express Pedi Electronic Foot File is a handy electronic foot file that comprises of a rotating head. It is battery operated so there was no need to carry a heavy charger around, and there is an easy snap-on plastic cover to prevent the filing head from snagging anything in your luggage!
It is easily switched on / off by rotating the silver ring to either the on or off position. I liked the size and weight of the handle and found it easy to handle with one hand. Once turned on, the head starts to roll at a fairly rapid clip and all that is required is to hold the device to the affected area.
When I first turned it on, I was taken aback by the whirring sound and the roughened roller head seemed rather prohibitive. However, once I held it to my foot, it actually felt quite comforting! There is a slight ergonomic curve to the roller so that with the smallest twists of my wrists I am able to reach all the various parts of my feet, no acrobatics needed!
Scholl’s Velvet Smooth Express Pedi Electronic Foot File is surprisingly gentle, and there is even a safety stop built in that switches the device off when too much pressure is exerted. This protects the skin which is important because when too much is removed at a time, the body’s natural repair mechanism ends up building even thicker calluses! As you can see from the before and after comparison photos above, the long-accumulated callus on the cushy part of my foot was nicely smoothened after using Scholl Velvet Smooth Express Pedi Electronic Foot File!
On my badly cracked heel, it did smoothen away some of the dead skin, but the deeper cracks are still visible. It is important to note that Scholl’s Velvet Smooth Express Pedi Electronic Foot File is more about buffing away dead skin to reveal the softer, younger skin than scraping or cutting away thick layers of skin. Cutting is actually very dangerous and not healthy for the feet in the long run. Also, Scholl does not recommend soaking your feet prior to using the device, which kind of runs contrary to the general practice at nail salons. Personally, I am also worried about using the device on damp skin or anywhere near water as it runs on batteries and is not tightly sealed against water. However, I feel the results are somewhat limited when using on dry cracked skin.
Regardless, Scholl Velvet Smooth Express Pedi Electronic Foot File is useful to have at home for regular maintenance in between salon visits. It is also particularly helpful when you are not able to get to a salon at all. Priced at SGD49.90, it is much more affordable than frequent pedicures, and the roller head may also be washed and replaced when needed (SGD19.90 for a 2-pack!). If you are keen to try it out, you may enjoy a special introductory discount of 10% when you enter the code “rmlinda” when you checkout at Redmart [unaffiliated] before 31 Dec 2015!
