I have been favouring more neutral lips for a good part of this past year, perhaps it is a little bit of a growing up process or a reflection of my general mood. But as I head into the Christmas season, I’m suddenly feeling a penchant for bolder colors again. And I’m heralding in this return to a more vibrant aesthetic with a fistful of new Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited!
Shu Uemura’s Rouge Unlimited range of lipsticks should not be a stranger to you, after all the line has been around for 11 years now. There is no other brand I can think of that has as extensive a range of color shades, textures and finishes as this. From sheer [here] to matte [here] even supreme shine [here], there is one for everybody. This AW2017, Shu Uemura has reformulated its classic Rouge Unlimited Central line, making the lipsticks even lighter and smoother on the lips than ever!
There are 37 brand new Rouge Unlimited to play with, of which 33 are new colors (across 6 different color families) and 4 are unique mixers! The improved lightweight and silky texture enables these lipsticks to be layered with each other for a variety of effects. You can create your own bespoke colors, and experiment with ombre / blurring / graduated effects. With the mixers, you can now tailor each lipstick to your own preference by deepening (purple mixer) or warming (yellow mixer) the undertones, and/or amping up your lip color with glitter or pearl.
I have 4 of the hero shades and 1 of the mixers to show you, and they are swatched above for your reference. As you can see, the glitter mixer has a translucent base and contains mainly pale champagne gold glitters although there is some pale pink in there that is not captured properly. My lips generally don’t take well to glitters, so I was very surprised by how imperceptible these glitters feel! They did not irritate me in any way, and I never even remembered I was wearing them.
I wanted to show you how each of the shades look on my lips, and everything is single swipe only! Notice how pigmented and true to color each of the shades are. Shu Uemura has employed some interesting new technology for these new Rouge Unlimited, such that they each feel almost jelly when applied to the lips, melting slightly when touched to the lips for a smooth even swipe. There is also a nice creamy luster to all of them, and they feel as comfortable on as you can imagine. Even with the increased slip, I did not experience any feathering of these new Rouge Unlimited, and they also had excellent longevity. The glitter mixer adds a slight warmth to the lip color due to the golden hue, and also lightens the color a little bit (possibly also because swiping with my lip brush sheers out the underlying lipstick). But the glitter is very fine and adds an interesting dimension.
Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited is now out at all counters… pop by for some unlimited lip vibes!
