Aveda SS13 Full Spectrum Hair Makeover Session

April 16, 2013

The wonderfully generous folks at Aveda invited me over to their HQ yesterday for a complimentary hair coloring session!  This is actually my 2nd visit as I was unable to experience their full spectrum hair color (read here) when I was here last October.  It may have been a blessing in disguise as I’m in love with their SS13 Art of Nature hair designs!! This Spring / Summer, the creative team at Aveda has drawn on the influence of nature, to create their signature looks.  The focus is on lighter, airier textures and layers.  There is an ease about the looks, working with the natural tresses and amping up the volume using a variety of hues.  Colors are brighter and leaning towards coppers, away from the darker reds of the last season. The moment I stepped into their office, I was made to feel extremely welcomed by Vivien, Senior Product Executive for Aveda.  When I stepped into the hair studio, Ming, Educator for Aveda Institute Singapore, immediately recognized me from my last visit (more than 6 months ago!) and gave me a warm hello.  It really feels as if once you are a member of the Aveda community, you are family. To start off my Aveda experience, Vivien let me pick out 3 essential oils – ylang ylang, bergamot, and patchouli – warmed them up in her hands, and had me close my eyes and inhale deeply thrice.  This exercise was immensely relaxing and I felt nice and warm, ready for the next.

I really wanted to experience the latest ombre trend, and Ming readily agreed to help me out.  Given that I still have a rather serious day-job to attend to, Ming suggested a light blond for my ends whilst keeping close to my original hair color on top. Before doing anything to my hair, Ming first massaged treatment oil to my scalp to protect it.  Rather than a single monotone block that goes in sharp contrast with the top, Ming used a highlighting technique to pull out strands to give my ends 2-3 different shades.  He also varied the lengths so that the colors blended better with my crown.  It was tough work, and took 4 whole hours to complete! While I waited, Vivien gave me a super luxurious hand scrub and massage using their latest Stress Fix soaking salts and body lotion.  The Stress Fix range of products are formulated with a unique blend of lavender, lavandin and clary sage, and smelled marvelous.  I’m not usually fond of lavender, but this blend is so different…there is a warmth and floral sweetness to it that fuses harmoniously with the relaxing lavender.  The interlude left my hands feeling baby soft and glowy!  If only I could use it on my face……!

Once my coloring was done, Ming styled it with Aveda’s Be Curly range of products.  First, he applied Be Curly Style Prep on my hair, then twisted them in small locks and added the Be Curly Curl Enhancer.  Next he dried the locks using a diffuser.  Finally, to set the look, he sprayed on Be Curly Curl Enhancing Hair Spray.
