Luxury Foundations: YSL vs. Tom Ford vs. Guerlain

March 29, 2013

Gosh, I’m like a million years behind with the latest batch of foundations and am slowly playing catch up.

I finally got to test out YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat Foundation, Tom Ford Traceless Foundation, and Guerlain Blanc de Perle Fluid Foundation.  I’m really loving this batch of foundations as they are all incredibly light-weight, leaving you with a second-skin feel.  What made me classify these 3 together is their luxury market positioning and corresponding price point.  Given the many reviews already out there, I thought I’ll stack these 3 together to make things more interesting.

YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat Foundation, SPF 20

YSL le teint touche eclat foundation

Building on their success with Touche Eclat concealer / highlighter, Yves Saint Laurent has introduced Le Teint Touche Eclat Foundation with a built-in SPF 20.

“Infused in a weightless fluid, Touche Éclat foundation targets shadowy areas and highlights the contours of the face. With buildable coverage and free of opaque fillers, this foundation’s perfecting texture evens the complexion and helps conceal imperfections, enhancing your skin’s natural beauty.”

This is the most light-weight of all 3 tested, and has the most watery texture.  The texture feels amazing, but takes a tad more work to blend as it tends towards runny & streaky.  It requires only the smallest amount to cover the entire face, which makes it slightly more value for money.  Coverage is medium-ish, adequately evens out any redness and pigmentation.  However, particularly stubborn blemishes will still require a concealor.

The SA matched me with B20 which is slightly too light with pink undertones.  While it is not too off and brightened up my complexion, there is a noticeable contrast between my face and neck that I found troubling.

What truly astounds me is the radiance and light it brings to my face.  The formula also carries some shine to create a dewy look.  That turned out slightly problematic for my combination skin.  To reduce shine, I layered Le Teint Touche Eclat over a shine-control primer, and topped off with loose powder.  The result is a cleaner look with an overall brightness.  My only gripe is this only lasted me 4-5 hours… By the end of a work day, it seems to have completely vanished…

Tom Ford Traceless Foundation, SPF 15

Tom Ford Traceless Illuminating Foundation

The latest luxury beauty brand in town, Tom Ford has been receiving rave reviews for its Traceless Foundation with built-in SPF 15.

“This unique, 3-in-1 foundation delivers a balanced complexion that glows with vitality and radiance. Extremely lightweight and luminous, it includes the skin-nourishing Tom Ford Infusing Complex to help protect skin and promote its vibrancy from within. Micronized pigments deliver seamless and undetectable coverage that is easy to build up or sheer down.

The Tom Ford Infusing Complex infuses skin with a potent combination of specially selected nutrients that help skin stimulate its natural repair mechanisms. By helping skin cells replenish their natural energy, it fundamentally rejuvenates the complexion, so it looks and feels brighter, fresher, and less tired. High-performing antioxidants help protect the skin, creating a vital-looking face. The skin is left looking renewed, resilient, and smoother.”

This is my fave out of the 3!!  Maybe I’m just a sucker for anything high-priced… At $128 per bottle, this is certainly the most expensive liquid foundation in the market at the moment.  The texture is not as runny as YSL, rendering it easier to work with.  Once blended, it feels light as air, and gives a beautiful satin finish.  Shade 02 is my perfect match and is very true to my natural color.  Coverage is medium, and it is easy to dab on more on stubborn areas.

I loved the healthy glowing look this foundation gave me.  As for its longer-term skincare benefits, I’m sceptical as the beneficial ingredients are a tiny portion of the overall product.  But, a little is better than nothing, right?

However, similar to YSL, this foundation does not have major staying power, although it doesn’t completely wear off either.  I would reserve this for evening outings and other special occasions.

Guerlain Blanc de Perle Fluid Foundation, SPF20++

guerlain-2 copy

Oh Guerlain, oh Guerlain!  This French house is slowly but surely invading prime real estate on my vanity.  So when they invited me to their Blanc de Perle workshop (reviewed here!), I simply had to go!  Central to the latest Blanc de Perle collection, is the Fluid Foundation.

“Radiance-boosting and moisture-balancing, Blanc de Perle Fluid Foundation is imbued with the most precious qualities of pearls to reveal your true beauty. With its absorbent powders, it offers instant and long-lasting shine-control while an imperceptible film retains moisture at the skin surface for optimal hydration. The complexion regains the smooth perfection and luminous clarity of a white pearl – even, smooth, fresh and flawless.”

This is the longest lasting of all 3 foundations tested here.  It is light weight and fluid, although perhaps not to the same degree as YSL.  Regardless, it is a breeze to blend, and provides a nice medium coverage.  It is also the most buildable of the 3, which makes it great for ladies who prefer greater coverage.  Once applied, it leaves a radiant finish that stays even when matted with Guerlain’s Shine Control primer (FAVE!!) and loose powder.

My only gripe with this foundation is the lack of color choices.  There are only 01, 02, 31 and 32.  These numbers also don’t quite correspond with the other Guerlain foundation lines.  Shades 01 and 02 have a pink undertone for greater radiance, whilst shades 31 and 32 have greater beige undertone to combat redness.  For some reason, I picked up 32 as 02 looked too rosy to me.  It was not until I covered the entire face that I found it looked a tad dull on me… 02 would had been much better.

I wore this out for about 5 hours and it stayed on perfect, making this the most ideal foundation for daily wear!

All 3 featured today – YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat Foundation, Tom Ford Traceless Foundation, and Guerlain Blanc de Perle Fluid Foundation – are beautiful formulas that feel like invisible 2nd skins.  Individually, they have their own unique characteristics that set them apart.  For me, I would reserve YSL and Tom Ford for special occasions, and Guerlain would be the best for longer lasting wear.  Regardless of which you pick, you are sure to walk out radiant and confident!

Let me know if you’ve had a chance to try any of them!

Thanks for the great review!! I love how the YSL foundation gives me a perfect finish and controls the oiliness on my skin! I’ve also tried Guerlain, it was great but for some reason, I couldn’t see the radiance, natural shine I get withYSL! So YSL is a def a winner…. I never tried Tom Ford foundation, you stated the price was 128, quite pricey, will try it but then I will expect more since it costs double the price of my favorite foundation!

  2. Great review! Been wanting to know about the YSL foundation and it sounds too sheer for me. Thank you for this post!

  3. i am OBSESSED with the TF foundation. it’s so pricey, but i love it!
