Jo Malone always slay with the gift packaging, and this Christmas 2017 is made even more fun and whimsical with all the pops of cheery colours! There are lots of gorgeous gift sets for the picking – from affordable crackers filled with miniatures of some of my personal favorites, to decadent advents stuffed with every imaginable form of pampering. Amidst all the festivities, there is a brand new, limited edition fragrance that you shouldn’t miss – Jo Malone Green Almond & Redcurrant; as well as a couple of crowd favourites dressed up in exclusive packaging!
Building upon the success of the redcurrant accord introduced last Fall [see here], Jo Malone sets the festive mood with Green Almond and Redcurrant. This starts out on a tart green note which feels a little raw and alive to the senses. It provides a nice contrast to the milky, almost powdery almond accord. A rounded, juicy fruitiness emerges moments later, provided by the redcurrant accord. Tonka bean lends the fragrance a slight toasted gourmand touch which I really like, though this is very subtle and near-imperceptible unless you’re very sensitive to vanilla. Cedar and sandalwood at the base reinforces the tart, green quality of the brew; bringing all the notes together seamlessly.
Last year’s Christmas fragrance proved to be so popular, Jo Malone has decided to bring back Orange Bitters this year in a golden packaging. I did not take to this fragrance last year, but I am clearly in a different place this year because I fell in love! Oddly, I sensed enough similarities between Orange Bitters and Green Almond & Redcurrant to help me appreciate it more, yet sufficiently different to layer together for a even more complex and intriguing blend.
In case you are not familiar, Orange Bitters pack a double dose of citrus – juicy and sweet orange, and aromatic and tart mandarin. Prune adds an unexpected twist to the mix, and when paired with warm amber and sandalwood at the base, transforms the entirety to a whole new alleviated level!
I wanted to take a moment to appreciate the beautiful design of the fragrances being celebrated this season. Green Almond & Redcurrant is in a quirky matte pink ceramic bottle with a white cap. The front label is detailed in green, the resultant look is rather girlie and unusual for Jo Malone. And to mix it all up, there is a thick black and white grosgrain ribbon encircling the bottle, intentionally covering up the label for an element of surprise. The popular English Pear & Freesia is given a dapper new look this season with a white and black matte ceramic bottle adorned with a golden cap. I have a brand new bottle of it somewhere at home, but decided to go and get this limited edition piece as well because it just looks so handsome on my shelf! I should also mention that Orange Bitters is available in a smaller 30ml version this year, in case you had been hesitant to take the plunge before with just the 100ml available.
