This year’s Holiday collection from Chanel seems to be toned down from previous years. It feels apt and reasonable given this year’s celebrations will surely be muted. Regardless, what we miss in quantity is an ever higher quality, with each piece exquisitely crafted and deserving of our love. Let me show you some of my favourites from Les Chaines d’Or de Chanel!
At first glimpse, it is immediately clear where Lucia Pica drew her inspiration for this Holiday 2020 makeup collection. Chanel revolutionised and liberated women by adding a golden chain strap to a handbag, thereby freeing women’s hands for other tasks. At the same time, by weaving a simple strip of leather through common chain, it elevated the ordinary into an iconic symbol. Today, Lucia Pica has woven golden pigments through rich, deep hues to create a sumptuous palette. All the powders of the Les Chaines d’Or collection are decorated with golden chain embossing, making them irresistible for us collectors.
If you buy nothing else this season, you need to pick up the Illuminating Blush Powder in Rose Cuivre Satine. This is a warm rosewood blush with threads of copper shot through it. It has a gorgeous satin finish, that looks natural yet still draws light to the high points of the face. Lucia Pica has designed this to be a multi-tasking powder – pick up just a tiny bit with an airy highlighting brush and sweep over the foreheads, nose and chin for a burst of luminosity. Rose Cuivre Satine wears easily as a blush on cheeks either on its own or layered over another blush; and may also be worn on the lids as eyeshadow.
There are 4 Ombre Premiere for the eyes, all of them beautifully embossed with the Chanel chains. My top picks are Or Antique (925) and Cuir Brun (928). Both have a satin finish, and generous sprinklings of gold. Or Antique is a slightly translucent antique gold, and Cuir Brun is a deep bronze. Both are well pigmented and easy to apply with just a few gentle sweeps of the brush, without disturbing the embossing on the palette too much.
I have not been wearing lipsticks much in the past months, but this season’s Rouge Allure made me want to wear lipsticks all the time again. The casings come trimmed in gold just for this special occasion, and gold tones are also worked into all 4 lipsticks. I received 2 of the lipsticks, and both are huge loves for me. Or Beige (107) is a medium caramel that pulls redder on me than beige, which is so much more interesting than yet another nude. Rouge d’Or (127) is one everybody needs to own, it is a neutral- cool-leaning red with the loveliest gold flecks to give this a dimensional and luxurious feel.
Nail polish may be the last thing on your mind if you are dealing with dry irritated hands like me from all that constant washing and sanitising. However, I feel naked whenever my nails are bare, and getting to a nail salon is a bit of a challenge for me at the moment. So a super forgiving, metallic polish like Chanel Le Vernis Chaine d’Or comes in super useful. I am currently wearing it on my toes, and I feel like a princess!
