I am sitting on a train as I type this, yes, I am leaving snowy Cologne behind and heading over to Amsterdam for the weekend. I had initially thought I’d stay indoors huddled up, and catch up on the blog, read, and couch potato my way through the weekend; but let’s face it, it’s not very often that I get an entire weekend free to myself, open to all possibilities. Time to do with as I please, an easy train ride to some of the most exciting cities of the world literally just at my doorstep, and so much of the world I have yet to see. So, I’m plucking up my grit, shaking out of my comfy sweatpants, and going exploring on my own. And in the same spirit of freedom and inspiration, I thought it might be apt to share with you my latest obsession in the fragrance department – an Unnamed bottle from an insouciant Swedish brand (a little north of where I am heading) Byredo.

I’ve been wanting to try something from Guerlain’s exclusive L’Art et La Matière Collection ever since they were made available here in Singapore last year, but never found one that I could identify with until now. The L’Art et La Matière Collection was first released in 2005, and represents Guerlain’s goal of creating olfactory art through the use of the finest raw materials in perfumery. It is also a pun after the French expression L’Art et la Manière – the art and manners; and for me, it is perhaps the most modern in style from the vast range of fragrances that Guerlain has to offer. And the latest member of the collection best represents that to me – Neroli Outrenoir.

I am really starting to build up a little cozy family of these fluted bottles. Having reviewed the grand dame of them all – Black Orchid – as well as the summer stunner Soleil Blanc (which is not really a flanker); I feel the need to round things up with Tom Ford Velvet Orchid. Featured in the recent Orchid Collection [see here], there is no better time than now, to take a moment and appreciate the beauty of Velvet Orchid!

It is not everyday that high end fragrance companies turn out a new scent, and this year Tom Ford seems to be on a roll. After releasing 2 new flankers to the Neroli Portofino family [read here], and 2 inaugural fragrances to the Soleil collection [here and here]; now Tom Ford has gone and completely redefined the classical “green” note in perfumery with the brand new Tom Ford Private Blend Les Extraits Verts Collection.

Chanel N°5 is one of those famed fragrances that every girl grew up hearing about, and possibly dream of owning some day. In the world of perfumery, Chanel N°5 is significant for departing from the single florals that women used to wear, and has grown to be synonymous with the spirit of liberation that Coco Chanel embodied. The original N°5 is so much more than just a perfume, it is an olfactory heritage that has been passed down through the generations for the past 95 years. As a lover of the brand, N°5 was something I had aspired towards, but could never quite embrace fully… until now.

I’m going through a phase… where I just don’t feel like wearing anything at all… fragrance I mean. Do you sometimes feel that way? It is certainly not for a lack of choices, but simply that transient stage in between seasons of change, and nothing seems to fit. When there is just too much going on, I prefer having nothing on at all. But when I find myself in a crowded train and the crush of humanity is just overwhelming, or smelling a little greasy after lunch… I like to reach for DKNY Be Tempted Eau So Blush.
